My Plant Journey (so far)
How did I get started with growing plants? Well, to be honest, my plant journey began with me loving my plants a little *too* much. I was constantly overwatering them, not understanding why they didn’t seem happy in my home.
When my husband and I moved to Portland, Oregon, he suggested we get some plants for our new space. Given my track record, I actually begged him to get artificial ones! Looking back now, I can’t believe how unsure I was about taking care of living plants.
We eventually got a big Bird of Paradise—and it wasn’t happy from the start. It had spider mites, crispy leaves, brown edges, and never unfurled properly. I was so discouraged, trying my best to keep it alive.
That’s when I decided to visit a local plant shop for help. They recommended a Sansevieria Bacularis Mikado and a ZZ plant—both of which were perfect for me! They thrive on minimal care, and I quickly learned that I could water them once a month, and they’d still be happy.
From there, my plant journey truly blossomed. I went from buying basic Monsteras and Philodendrons to hunting down their variegated varieties. I joined plant communities, both online and in person, and I learned so much about plant care and even plant economics during Covid. As an Occupational Therapist, I also started bringing plants into my workplaces, and it was incredible to see how much joy they brought to my patients.
I could talk endlessly about how much my plants have changed my life—they've been such a rewarding and therapeutic part of my journey. That’s why I’m so excited to share my experiences with you through this blog!
I’ll be posting much more, so I hope you’ll follow along. Thanks so much for being here!
