Pet-Safe Houseplants: Creating a Green Haven for You and Your Furry Friends

If you’re a plant parent and a pet lover, you know the struggle: finding houseplants that are both beautiful and safe for your furry companions. Our cats, dogs, and other curious critters love to sniff, nibble, and explore—so why not fill your home with greenery that keeps them safe while enhancing your space?

Here’s a roundup of pet-friendly houseplants and tips to keep your home both stylish and secure.

Why Pet-Safe Plants Matter

Many common houseplants can pose risks to pets. From mild stomach upsets to more severe issues, knowing which plants are safe is a must. But don’t worry—there’s no need to sacrifice your love for greenery. There are plenty of gorgeous, non-toxic options to choose from!

Top Pet-Safe Houseplants

  1. Areca Palm (Dypsis lutescens)
This lush, tropical beauty adds height and texture to any room. Areca palms are not only safe for pets but also fantastic air purifiers. They thrive in bright, indirect light and love a regular watering schedule. But here’s a tip for you! These palms seem to be a magnet for spider mites! Be sure to regularly keep an eye on the palms for these nasty critters and treat accordingly.

  2. Calathea (Prayer Plant)
With its striking, patterned leaves, the calathea is a showstopper! It’s non-toxic and thrives in medium to low light with consistent moisture. Plus, the way its leaves fold up at night adds a touch of magic to your space. Another tip for you! These tend to get crispy edges in my care if they do not get as much humidity as they like. I tend to not bring these dramatic plants in my home. I love plants that are less dramatic.

  3. Pilea (Pilea Peperomioides)
Very cute, very bubbly and safe for pets? Count me in! This plant likes a good amount of light to get even leaf distribution and to not become very spindly. In the PNW, a consistent light source from above will help this plant get the full look you desire.

  4. Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum)
Perfect for hanging baskets, the spider plant is resilient, pet-safe, and an air-purifying champion. It even produces "babies" that you can propagate for free plants!

  5. Boston Fern (Nephrolepis exaltata)
Furry friends will appreciate this feathery, whimsical plant! Boston ferns thrive in humidity, making them perfect for bathrooms or mist-loving plant parents.

Care Tips for Pet-Safe Plants

  • Placement is Key: Even with safe plants, it’s a good idea to place them out of reach. While nibbling won’t hurt, your plant might not appreciate being treated as a chew toy!

  • Non-Toxic Doesn’t Mean Edible: Some plants may still cause mild tummy issues if consumed in large amounts, so it’s best to discourage chewing.

  • Monitor Your Pets: Keep an eye on your pets’ behavior around new plants to ensure harmony in your home.

Creating a Green and Pet-Friendly Home

Your living space can be a sanctuary for both you and your beloved pets. By choosing pet-safe houseplants, you’ll enjoy the beauty of nature without the worry. Whether you’re just starting your collection or adding to your jungle, these non-toxic plants are perfect for growing your green oasis.
